Health

“Calm mind brings inner strength and self-confidence, so that’s very important for good health” Dalai Lama   Health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being. Today, three types of definition of health seem to be possible and are used. The first is that health is the absence of any disease or impairment. The second is that health is a state that allows the individual to adequately cope with all demands of daily life (implying also the absence of disease and impairment). The third definition states that health is a state of balance, an equilibrium that an individual has established within himself and between himself and his social and physical environment. Good health is central to handling stress and living a longer, more active life. TYPES : Mental and physical health are probably the two most frequently discussed types of health.   Spiritual, emotional, and financial health also contribute to overall health. Medical experts have linked these to ...

Children are the future of a country; protect them, protect the nation

“THERE IS NO REASON, NO EXCUSE CHILD LABOUR IS CHILD ABUSE” 152 million children are a worldwide victim of child labour; 88 million boys and 64 million girls. In India itself, 12.9 a million children are involved in child labour activities among which 72% are engaged in agricultural fields as child labourers and 20% children aged between 15-17 years old are involved in hazardous industrial Jobs. Uttar Pradesh accounts for the biggest hub of child labours. Some of the central and state government schemes for eradicating child labour and uplifting the condition of children involved in this trap from a long time ago are: A)Factories Act of 1948: The act prohibits the employment of children below the age of 14 years in any factory. The law also played rules on who, when and how long can a pre-adults aged 15-18 years be employed in any factory. B) Mines Act of 1952: The act prohibits the employment of children below 18 years of age in a mine. Mining being the most dangerous oc...

The Second Sex

In the course of some research that I was doing on the patriarchal ideology in our country, I discovered that Sigmund Freud has conveniently described women as the "mutilated man".  Of course, how on earth could a woman possibly have an identity independent of a Man's? A woman is nothing but "Man's half"- no, a woman is a Man that has been discarded. Couple this with Freud's ridiculous theory of "penis envy" and you already have two of the many reasons why I despise Sigmund Freud. Putting that aside, let's concentrate on why I started out at all. WOMEN. Or more specifically, women's position in our society. One need not even go as far back as the not so ancient "ancient times", and all that "traditional position of women" gibberish. Look at the society around you now.  I come from a "progressive" family, but often i'm told not to go out in the clothes I'm wearing because my "top is too short...

MENSTRUATION

Image
Periods are a natural and vital part of a woman’s life. It is normal vaginal bleeding that occurs as part of a woman’s monthly cycle. Every month millions of adolescent girls around the world face a miserable cycle of pain, discomfort , shame , anxiety and isolation when their menstrual period arrives. Menstruation is a phenomenon unique to girls. But it has been always surrounded by myths and taboos that exclude women from many aspects of socio-cultural life. These taboos, myths of societies impact women’s emotional and mental health. The cultural and social influence appears to be a hurdle for advancement in this subject till date. In many parts of India, culturally, menstruation is still considered as impure and dirty. The origin of myths and taboos dates back to the Vedic times and has often been linked to Indra’s slaying of vritras. Not entering the “puja” room is the major restriction among urban girls and whereas not entering the kitch...

Project Chaos

“The pursuit of knowledge may become harmful unless it is combined with wisdom.”  When Bertrand Russell wrote Knowledge and Wisdom , the year was still 1954. Technology was in the most nascent of its stage, invisible if safely assumed. But for an author to imprint the world with words as such, words that an eighteen-year-old teen might ponder over while writing an essay on cybersecurity, can be withheld beyond coincidence.  With every step that we take towards opening ourselves to the benefits of the world of technology, we unwarily give access to unseen perils that lurk in its shadows. The world continues its pursuit of new innovations every day, while we prevail in our attempts to catch up, not stopping to realize the plethora of privacy violations we subject ourselves to.  2020 was the year attributed to the pandemic. 2020 was also the year vulnerable to the biggest recession of all times. 2020 also happened to be the year of surge in cyber-crimes. Wh...
